Twist on a Summer Classic

Summer is a great time to cool off with a mixed drink. Here are a few that are twists on the classics. Feel free to share your own.
Gin and Tonic
Personally, I am not a big fan gin. It probably has something to do with the trauma I experienced while removing mounds of juniper bushes from around our house. But Alexis and my father-in-law love a good gin and tonic with a bit of lime, especially during the summer. This summer my dad passed along a recipe for a grapefruit tarragon gin and tonic which quickly became an instant classic in our house.
Grapefruit Tarragon Gin and Tonic.
Mojito
This is one is a mixture of three things that scream summer. Popsicles, mojitos and your vegetable garden. One more reason to grow mint and basil in your summer garden.
Rum
Rum is one of those liquors that can really go either way. A little bit of it and your good. Too much or layered with other alcohol and it isn’t going to be pretty. A couple years ago, a friend of mine introduced me to a Dark N’ Stormy and I found a drink that had just the right amount of rum. Thank Ken!
Non-Alcoholic Drinks
These drinks are great for friends and family that do not drink or when have a gathering and you want to make a special drink for the kids. Summer is a great time to explore non-alcoholic drinks.
Street Tacos steps from the beach
I love Mexican food. When people ask what one food I would want if I was stranded on an island, without hesitation I say Mexican. Growing up in Southern California I was eating some of the best Mexican food in the States at a very early age. Part of that experience included day-long family parties hosted by my mom’s Hispanic co-workers, surf trips to northern Baja, as well an my Aunt Patty’s homemade tortillas or refried beans.
So a few years ago when we first visited Anna Maria and came across Poppo’s Taqueria I was intrigued but a bit cautious as my experience with Mexican food in Florida has been less than impressive. Poppo’s did not disappoint! With fresh, natural, locally sourced, organic, made-in-house and free-range ingredients the flavor and quality was amazing. Tacos, burritos, bowls and more, but my favorite is the Wild Boar Chorizo Street Taco. So good! Made-in-house chips, salsa, and guac with one of many local micro-brew beers is a great way to start your meal.

Their Anna Maria location at 212 Pine Ave has a great rustic beach vibe where unlink most restaurants today you will not find a single TV. With enough seating inside and out it and plenty of car and bike parking the atmosphere encourages you to hangout for a while with friends and enjoy a second beer. In addition to the location on Anna Maria, my personal favorite, they also have three additional locations on the mainland in Bradenton.

When you are staying at the Beach Cruiser and a Mexican Street Taco made with fresh ingredients sounds pefect for lunch or dinner, there is no better place on Anna Maria than Poppo’s!

$100 Beach Bums gift certificate
Book a stay, mid-August through the end of October, at the Beach Cruiser you will receive a $100 gift certificate for rentals at Beach Bums. How awesome is that!
During a stay on Anna Maria last October we rented bikes (adult and kid sizes), beach chairs, umbrella and a paddle board from Beach Bums. The staff was super friendly and easy to work with. They delivered all the gear to the house, free of charge, and put it in the gated yard even though we weren’t home. We wanted to rent the paddle board for a couple more days and all it took was a quick call. They also rent coolers, corn hole, kayaks and more.
Beach Bums is located in the heart of Anna Maria at 427 Pine Avenue. They are open 7 days a week from 9am-5pm. If you are hungry while you are at Beach Bums setting up your rental, check out these great places to eat on Pine Avenue…
